Artificial intelligence and digital technologies are becoming one of the main factors shaping the future of the maritime sector. These technologies enable processes inherent to human intelligence to be carried out through machines and computer systems.
According to sea-news.az that Dimitrios Dalaklis, head of the Maritime Safety and Environmental Protection Administration and professor at the World Maritime University (WMU), said these words at the “Safe Passage 2026” forum held in Baku.
He noted that there are extensive opportunities for the application of artificial intelligence in the maritime field. Technologies such as expert systems, natural language processing, speech and image recognition, and computer vision make an important contribution to increasing safety and efficiency in shipping.
“Today, sensor technologies used on modern ships have reached a sufficiently high level of development. In the next stage, the main focus should be directed towards more efficient processing of existing data and their proper utilization. From this perspective, the application of advanced software and artificial intelligence tools is of particular importance. Through artificial intelligence, vessels can analyze environmental data faster, identify potential risks in advance, and support safer navigation processes. These technologies also create opportunities to reduce human errors, increase operational efficiency, and further improve safety standards in maritime transport,” the professor stated.
