The modernization of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars (BTK) railway line has once again highlighted its growing strategic role within the Middle Corridor.

According to sea-news.az Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu emphasized that the BTK railway is one of the key transport arteries formed through the strategic cooperation of Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. After modernization, the line is expected to gain significantly higher cargo capacity and operational efficiency.

Key Target: 5 Million Tons Annually

One of the main indicators mentioned is the target of transporting 5 million tons of cargo per year, which is particularly significant in terms of:

  • Strengthening the Middle Corridor’s role in Europe–Asia trade
  • Providing an alternative to delays and risks in maritime routes
  • Reducing regional logistics costs
  • Increasing transit revenues for Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye

A Strategic Alternative to Sea Routes

The BTK railway is also regarded as one of the most stable and geopolitically secure routes in the global China–Europe trade chain. The ongoing modernization is expected to further enhance its competitiveness, enabling it to handle larger cargo volumes.

Beyond Transport: Regional Integration

Overall, the project is seen not only as a transport infrastructure development but also as a strategic driver of economic integration among regional countries, strengthening cooperation and trade connectivity across Eurasia.
