A total of 110 migrants have been rescued off the coast of Mauritania in an incident that highlights the continued risks of the West African migration route.

According to sea-news.az the boat departed from Banjul, The Gambia, heading into the Atlantic Ocean. However, it ran into serious trouble near Nouakchott, approximately 8 nautical miles from the coast, after its engine failed, leaving it at risk of sinking.

The Mauritanian Coast Guard successfully rescued all passengers, preventing a major loss of life.

Nationalities of Those Rescued

The migrants onboard were from several West African countries:

  • 80 from Mali
  • 12 from Senegal
  • 10 from The Gambia
  • 4 from Mauritania
  • 3 from Côte d’Ivoire
  • 1 from Nigeria

A Dangerous Migration Route

The composition of the group reflects the ongoing migration pressure across West Africa, where many people attempt dangerous sea journeys in search of safety or better economic opportunities in other regions.

Authorities stated that all rescued individuals were subjected to standard humanitarian and legal procedures, including medical assistance, registration, and the assessment of their migration status.

Officials emphasize that such incidents underline both the persistent activity of irregular migration networks and the significant risks faced by migrants attempting Atlantic crossings in unsafe vessels.
