A container vessel whose construction was halted due to the 2008 global financial crisis has finally entered commercial service after a lengthy delay. The 917-TEU container ship “Behram Box” has been delivered and subsequently chartered by Unifeeder.
According to sea-news.az citing Seanews.az construction of the vessel began nearly 20 years ago at Türkiye’s UM Shipyard, but work was suspended as a result of the financial crisis. The ship was later transferred from Gölcük to Tuzla, where construction was completed.
A second vessel from the same project, “Numan Box,” is also expected to enter service in the near future.
Often referred to by industry observers as “Türkiye’s dream ships,” the vessels have been assigned new IMO numbers. Although construction originally began in the mid-2000s, they will be officially registered as 2026-built vessels.
Behram Box has already commenced operations on a cargo service route between Türkiye and Bulgaria. The successful completion of the project is seen as a sign of growing demand in regional container shipping and increased activity in the vessel chartering market.
