The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has donated the wreckage of the fishing vessel Nicola Faith, which tragically sank in 2021, to Cranfield University.
The 9.8-meter steel-hulled vessel, recovered from the seabed after an accident that claimed the lives of three crew members, will now serve as a practical training tool for future marine investigators.
Investigations conducted after the vessel disappeared off the coast of Wales and was found following months of intensive searches revealed that numerous modifications made to the vessel’s structure had significantly reduced its stability. The inquiry concluded that the vessel capsized and sank due to overloading.
Using the donated wreckage and collected evidence, students will develop investigative skills through real-life accident scenarios. Renamed Pisces II, the vessel will replace an older training ship that had long been used for this purpose.
