The UK Royal Navy plans to allocate up to £200,000 for the development of a new formal uniform for female service members.
According to The Times, citing an internal Navy document, the decision follows complaints regarding the “inappropriate placement” of buttons on the current uniform.
The document states that the existing “old-style” ceremonial uniform is to be replaced with a redesigned version, with the project funded from the state budget.
The current uniform features four rows of buttons, with two buttons in each row on the front section. In the new design, all buttons are expected to be positioned lower.
More than 950 female officers will receive the updated uniform.
According to the publication, the Royal Navy document emphasizes that the placement of the upper “decorative” buttons on the old No.1 uniform for female officers was considered unsuitable.
The new uniforms are scheduled to be introduced in two phases — in September this year and February next year.
