A representative of the State Maritime and Port Agency (SMPA) represented Azerbaijan at the 113th session of the Legal Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), held in London.

Nishat Rahimov, Head of the Legislative Projects Division of the Agency’s Legal Department, participated in the event.

The session discussed issues related to facilitating the entry into force and harmonized interpretation of the 2010 Protocol on Hazardous and Noxious Substances, as well as regulations concerning the implementation of IMO instruments.

Measures to prevent illegal practices related to ship identity fraud and fraudulent ship registries were also reviewed, along with international regulations and best practices concerning ship registration.

Participants exchanged views on IMO liability and compensation regimes for alternative fuels, the regulation of maritime autonomous surface ships, piracy and armed robbery against ships, and measures aimed at preventing threats at sea.

It was also announced during the session that a new section related to ship sales and purchases would be added to the Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS). IMO member states were encouraged to join the newly entered-into-force Convention on the Sale and Purchase of Ships and to ensure the submission of relevant information to the IMO through the GISIS platform.

Discussions were also held with representatives of IMO member states on issues of mutual interest.
