Artificial intelligence achieves major success at sea

An AI-based route optimization system, developed by Heerema Marine Contractors in partnership with the French company Amphitrite, has yielded successful results.

According to sea-news.az that the pilot project was tested on the vessel Sleipnir, which was en route from Rotterdam to New York to install a substation for an offshore wind farm.

According to the company, the new technology reduced the transit time of the semi-submersible crane vessel Sleipnir across the North Atlantic by 2.5 days. The optimized route shortened the ship’s journey by 240 nautical miles and reduced carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by up to 18 percent.

The system was developed based on the vessel’s operational data from the previous five years, taking into account weather conditions, waves, and ocean currents.

The successful results of the project will enable Heerema to implement this AI-based route optimization technology on other vessels in its fleet.
