The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published an updated version of the international standard ISO 19697:2026 regarding electronic inclinometers used on ship bridges.
According to sea-news.az that the updated standard defines new requirements for the integration of electronic inclinometers with the Bridge Alert Management (BAM) system and the shipboard local area network (LAN). The document also includes an automatic alert function in the event of a power supply failure and updated technical requirements for data exchange.
Electronic inclinometers support safe navigation and accident investigations by measuring the vessel’s heel angle, roll amplitude, and period.
The update was prepared in accordance with the amendments made to the IMO’s SOLAS Convention. Under the new regulations, container ships and dry cargo vessels with a gross tonnage of 3,000 or more, built on or after January 1, 2026, must be equipped with an electronic inclinometer or an equivalent system.
