How did sailors communicate with each other in foggy weather or when visibility was limited?
According to sea-news.az that special sound signaling devices were used for this purpose in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of them was the foghorn — the diaphone.
The diaphone was designed for providing warning and signaling signals between ships at close range. Through this instrument, information was also conveyed regarding underwater rocks, shallow areas, and other dangerous obstacles.
By operating the mechanical handle of this exhibit, which consists of a wooden body, a signal pipe, and a mechanical support, it was possible to create various types of sound signals. The set also includes instructions for use prepared in English and French. To facilitate transport, a leather handle was attached to the body.
