A new study conducted in Denmark has found that remote pilotage systems could improve maritime safety, operational efficiency, and working conditions for pilots, while also introducing new challenges in cooperation between ship crews and shore-based operators.
According to sea-news.az reports that the study was carried out by researchers from ShippingLab, DanPilot, and the University of Southern Denmark, based on observations conducted both onboard vessels and in shore control centers.
According to the findings, remote pilotage is more likely to complement traditional pilotage services rather than fully replace them.
Denmark is considered one of the leading countries in this field. Last year, DanPilot and Danelec carried out the world’s first real-time remote pilotage trials based on live navigation data.
The research also highlights that while removing pilots from physically boarding vessels eliminates risky transfer operations, communication and trust between ship crews and shore-based pilots become even more critical.
Experts suggest that the most realistic future model will be a hybrid system, where traditional pilotage and digital remote pilotage operate side by side.
