According to sea-news.az the foundation of the Shah Deniz project was laid in 1996 with the signing of the Production Sharing Agreement, which is considered one of the most important milestones in Azerbaijan’s modern gas industry. The field was discovered in 1999, and production began in 2006. With the completion of the Southern Gas Corridor in 2020, Shah Deniz gas has been exported not only to regional countries but also to Europe.
The project is located in the Caspian Sea, approximately 70 km from Baku, and its reserves are estimated at around 1 trillion cubic meters of gas and 2 billion barrels of condensate. To date, hundreds of billions of cubic meters of gas have been produced and exported.
Shah Deniz is regarded as one of BP and its partners’ most successful projects both technologically and economically. With high-yield wells, large-scale platforms, and an extensive export infrastructure, it plays a key role in Azerbaijan’s energy exports. The project has also attracted significant foreign investment and holds an important position in regional energy security.
