Kazakhstan Railways Moves into Maritime Transport

68

The National Company “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” (KTZ) has launched the creation of its own maritime fleet, marking a strategic step toward strengthening the country’s transit potential and developing the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR).

A Strategic Shift Toward Sea Logistics

KTZ announced the start of a large-scale initiative aimed at building a dedicated fleet as part of efforts to enhance the Middle Corridor, which is becoming a key transit route between Asia and Europe.

According to the company, establishing its own fleet will strengthen Kazakhstan’s position in global logistics markets and improve the resilience of transport chains.

Contracts Signed for Six Vessels

The project is being implemented by “KTZ Express Shipping” LLC, a subsidiary of KTZ Express.

Contracts have already been signed for the construction of six vessels:

  • Four dry cargo ships will be built by China’s Jiangsu Haizhongzhou Shipping Industry Co., Ltd.;
  • Two vessels will be constructed at the Baku Shipyard.

This approach allows KTZ to diversify production and expand international cooperation in shipbuilding.

Versatile Vessels for Two Seas

The project предусматривает construction of “river-sea” class universal dry cargo container vessels, designed to operate across both the Caspian and Black Seas.

Key specifications include:

  • Deadweight: up to 9,900 tons
  • Capacity: up to 537 TEU
  • Adaptation for Caspian and Black Sea routes

These features will enable efficient integration of maritime transport with existing rail and port infrastructure, ensuring seamless cargo delivery.

Modern Technologies and Environmental Standards

The vessels will be equipped with advanced navigation and control systems and will comply with international safety and environmental standards, including IMO and MARPOL requirements.

Classification support will be provided by the international organization Bureau Veritas, which will:

  • enhance operational safety,
  • ensure compliance with global standards,
  • strengthen the confidence of international cargo owners.

Strengthening Kazakhstan’s Role in the Middle Corridor

KTZ emphasizes that the creation of its own fleet is a crucial step toward forming a полноценный maritime component of the Trans-Caspian route.

The project is expected to:

  • increase the corridor’s competitiveness,
  • reduce logistics costs,
  • strengthen Kazakhstan’s role as a transit hub between Europe and Asia,
  • provide greater independence in organizing transportation.
