Energy bridge

The next step has been taken in the implementation of the strategic submarine power cable project that will connect Georgia and Romania along the bottom of the Black Sea.

Sea-news.az reports that Romanias national electricity operator “Transelectrica” held a working meeting regarding the preparation of the marine part of the project. At the meeting, energy operators of Georgia and Romania, international experts, and representatives of government agencies discussed the organization of geological and geophysical surveys at the bottom of the Black Sea, the refinement of the cable route, and environmental assessment issues.

The total length of the submarine cable will be 1,155 kilometers (with 1,115 km of it along the sea bed). High-voltage direct current cables passing through depths of over 2,500 meters in some sections are considered one of Europe’s most complex energy infrastructure projects. Within the framework of the project, “Transelectrica” plans to construct new substations and lines in the Constanta region to integrate a transmission capacity of 1,300 megawatts into the national grid.

The main purpose of the project is to transport electricity produced in the South Caucasus, particularly through Azerbaijan’s green energy potential, to European markets via Georgia and Romania.

It should be noted that a strategic partnership agreement on this project was signed between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary in 2022. This initiative will make an important contribution to the European Union’s energy security and diversification of sources.
