In Singapore, the first ethanol bunkering trial has been conducted to reduce carbon emissions in maritime transport.

Sea-news.az reports that the operation was carried out with the participation of Maersk, Golden Island, and PSA Singapore, with support from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

5,000 tonnes of ISCC-certified bioethanol were supplied from the tanker Golden Centaurus to the Singapore-flagged dual-fuel container ship Maersk Halifax. The bunkering operation was conducted simultaneously with container loading and unloading activities at the port.

Ang Wee Keong, Chief Executive of MPA, stated that the trial will allow Singapore to evaluate the feasibility of leveraging its existing infrastructure and expertise in methanol bunkering for ethanol. The collected data will help establish standards and procedures for safe and efficient ethanol bunkering.

Emma Mazhari, representative of Maersk, emphasized the importance of exploring various alternative fuel options to decarbonize maritime transport. The company has previously conducted ethanol fuel trials on the vessels Laura Maersk, Antonia Maersk, and Tangier Maersk.
