South China’s largest electric-powered inland container ship, “Sui Gang Dian Hang 02,” has set sail on its maiden voyage. The vessel will operate on a new route providing zero-emission container transport between Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

Sea-news.az reports that the 240-TEU capacity vessel is equipped with modular battery replacement and charging systems. Each such vessel is expected to prevent over 550 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, reducing approximately 19,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over its operational lifetime.

The new route forms part of the Guangzhou Port’s “Shuttle Bus” logistics network and will serve to expand environmentally friendly container transportation across the Greater Bay Area.
