Following a fatal shark attack on a swimmer in Australia, a number of beaches in the Perth area will remain closed until Sunday.

Sea-news.az reports citing BBC, that Western Australian authorities have made a rare decision to capture and kill the shark following the attack.

The victim of the incident was 63-year-old Greg O’Neill. The attack took place on September 18 near the popular Sorrento Beach, north of Perth. The man’s body has not yet been recovered.

According to witnesses, O’Neill was attacked while swimming with another man. The other person managed to get out of the water at the time. The search for the shark is ongoing.

This is the second shark attack recorded in Western Australia within a week. Since the beginning of the year, this is the third fatal incident of its kind in the state.

The decision to capture and kill the shark is considered an exceptional measure in Western Australia. State Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis stated that, to her knowledge, such a decision is being made for the first time in about 10 years.

At the same time, authorities emphasized that great white sharks are protected, ruling out the possibility of their mass culling.
