In the wake of the August 30 passenger ship disaster off the coast of Girne, Erhan Arıklı, the Minister of Public Works and Transportation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), has been removed from his post as part of the ongoing investigation.
Sea-news.az reports citing Haber Global, that the announcement was made by TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel.
The Prime Minister stated that the decision was taken to ensure the absolute impartiality of the ongoing legal and investigative proceedings:
“This step is aimed at ensuring that the investigation process is carried out without giving rise to any debate or controversy. It is essential that the General Directorate of Police and judicial authorities are able to perform their duties properly,” Üstel emphasized.
