The body of one of the missing individuals has been found following the passenger ship accident off the coast of Northern Cyprus on August 30.
Sea-news.az reports citing Haber Global, that this was announced by Ünal Üstel, Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. According to him, the recovered body belongs to a 50-year-old man.
“No other findings have been encountered besides this body. Search operations will continue on a 24/7 basis, and DNA samples will be taken from the relatives of the missing persons,” the Prime Minister stated.
To recap, the high-speed passenger vessel Filo Jet, traveling between the port of Girne and the port of Tashucu in Mersin, began taking on water from its bow shortly after departing Girne on August 30 and capsized while attempting to return to the port of Girne. As a result of the incident, 241 people were rescued, and the wreckage of the sunken ship was detected at a depth of 550 meters in the sea. Azerbaijani citizens Valeh Hummatov and Rashad Ibrahimov, who were among the ship’s crew, were rescued but later brought to court as part of the investigation launched regarding the incident.
The search operations for the remaining missing persons are ongoing.
