Employees of the State Control Service for the Use and Protection of Water under the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency discovered that a specific section of Lake Boyukshor turned green on August 14.
Sea-news.az reports that, based on preliminary observations, the green coloration clinging to the surfaces of stones in a slimy, clustered form with various green shades strongly suggests that the process is caused by photosynthesis in algae.
It should be noted that August coincides with a period when favorable conditions can form for the development of photosynthetic organisms, including certain algae and cyanobacteria, in water bodies. Warm water temperatures, the intensity of sunlight, and the presence of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus in the aquatic environment can promote the rapid development of such organisms and the formation of local accumulations.
In this regard, the presence of the observed green mass may also be related to seasonal and natural biological processes. However, to determine the exact origin, composition, and physical-chemical parameters of this process rather than relying solely on visual observations, employees of the Service’s Central Laboratory took samples. Appropriate laboratory analyses on the samples are currently underway. Relevant measures will be taken depending on the analysis results.
