Despite the existing geopolitical tension, no restrictions are currently applied to the movement of vessels passing from the Turkish Straits (the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles) into the Black Sea.
Sea-news.az reports that Turkish officials made a statement regarding this. The Turkish side stated that the passage of ships through the straits is carried out freely in full compliance with the provisions of the Montreux Convention.
It should be noted that previously, the Bloomberg agency had reported that, against the background of increasing attacks by Russia and Ukraine on commercial vessels in the Black Sea, official Ankara had restricted transit traffic for security reasons. Turkish officials, however, denied these claims, emphasizing that freedom of navigation is ensured within the framework of International Maritime Law and the Montreux Convention.
