On the evening of August 3 and during the night of August 4, the Armed Forces of Russia launched consecutive missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s sea ports, shipping infrastructure, and cargo ships.
According to the report by sea-news.az citing official information from the Russian Ministry of Defense, four dry cargo ships allegedly carrying supplies for the Ukrainian army in the sea waters and ports were targeted and hit.
The statement by the Russian MoD reads: “A dry cargo ship with military-purpose cargo was hit at the Mykolaiv sea port, and a similar type of marine vessel carrying out unloading operations of military supplies was hit at the Yuzhny port. Two more dry cargo ships delivering weapons and military property to Ukrainian ports while moving by sea south of Odesa were also subjected to a strike at sea.”
Along with this, Russian troops fired upon the terminals at the Chornomorsk sea port located in the Odesa region and the territory of the Chornomorsk Automobile Aggregates Plant using high-precision weapons and UAVs.
In addition to the strikes on the ports, during the night of August 4, Russian military aviation bombed the city of Sumy in Ukraine with guided aerial bombs (KAB).
According to the information provided by Oleg Grigorov, Head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, a total of 6 aerial bombs fell on the Kovpakovsky district. As a result of the strikes, the civilian residential sector and infrastructure facilities suffered serious damage. Consequently, 3 people—an elderly woman and two minor girls aged 5 and 10 whose bodies were pulled from under the ruins of the house—lost their lives. Four more civilian residents were injured and sought medical assistance.
The Armed Forces of Russia launched further strikes using “Geran” type kamikaze unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on seven dry cargo ships in the Black Sea operational zone and the waters of the Mykolaiv sea port, which were reported to be carrying military supplies and property for the Ukrainian army.
These massive drone strikes against maritime transport vehicles and port infrastructure aim to significantly limit Kyiv’s capabilities to transport military equipment, ammunition, and weapons by sea.
The Russian military department stated that systematic sea/air attacks against maritime objects and cargo ships serving the logistics chain of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will continue henceforth.
