Regular scientific research and monitoring are carried out at the Institute of Geography of the Ministry of Science and Education to determine the main factors affecting the drop in the level of the Caspian Sea.
Sea-news.az reports citing information from the Institute, that the primary factors influencing the decline in the sea level are the decrease in water discharge in the Volga River and the increase in evaporation as a result of climate change.
Experts state that approximately 73 percent of the Caspian Sea’s water balance is formed at the expense of the Volga River. However, in recent years, the increase in water use by agricultural sectors and enterprises in the Volga basin has significantly reduced the water inflow into the sea.
At the same time, the rise in air temperature due to climate changes intensifies evaporation, while changes in wind speed and direction create conditions for evaporated air masses to be carried more rapidly over the sea. The Institute of Geography continues its scientific research to monitor this dynamic in the sea.
