The ancient Arab quarters (medinas) in the Comoros have become the country’s first property included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

According to sea-news.az citing UNESCO, that these settlements originated in the 11th century, and in the 14th–15th centuries they transformed into independent city-states and later centers of sultannesses.

UNESCO stated that the medinas were included in the list as an important example of the Comoros’ preserved traditions and island urban architecture. The total area of the historical sites is approximately 30.5 hectares.

It should be noted that prior to this, UNESCO had included six architectural monuments in the Middle East in the List of World Heritage in Danger. These include five castles in Lebanon and the Sebastia archaeological complex located in the West Bank of the Jordan River.
