On July 22, National Press Day is celebrated in Azerbaijan. 151 years have passed since this remarkable day when the “Ekinchi” newspaper began publication by the prominent enlightener Hasan bey Zardabi.
According to sea-news.az that despite the pressures of the tsarist regime and great risks, “Ekinchi” saw the light of day not only as the first press organ in the native language, but also as a historical turning point that gave impetus to the enlightenment and national awakening of the people. Functioning for only two years with 56 issues published, the newspaper became a mirror of an entire era.
Although our national press faced difficulties in various periods, it continued to express the spirit and struggle of the people:
- Establishment of freedom of speech: With the abolition of censorship in 1998, the press became a bearer of free thought and national identity.
- Heroes of the information front: During the 44-day Patriotic War in 2020, our journalists took great risks at the frontline, becoming living witnesses of our Victory history and heroes of the information struggle.
By the law approved by the head of state, the anniversary medal “150th anniversary of the Azerbaijani national press (1875-2025)” was established. In accordance with the relevant statute, individuals who have special services in the development of the media field, carry out effective activities, and excel in cooperation with the press are awarded this medal.
