A 19th-century navigation marvel: The mechanical speedometer at the “Surakhani” ship-museum

According to sea-news.az that while modern ships measure speed and distance using cutting-edge digital technology and professional navigation systems, 19th-century sailors relied on entirely different and fascinating mechanical devices. One such unique instrument is the mechanical speedometer designed in the shape of a harpoon, known as the “Harpoon Log.”

Working Principle: This device was deployed into the water behind the ship. As the vessel moved forward, the water resistance caused the harpoon to rotate. A special mechanism on the device calculated these rotations, automatically recording the distance traveled in nautical miles via the indicators on the dial. This method was used to determine the ship’s speed.
