Economic relations between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are primarily driven by cooperation in the energy, transport, and logistics sectors. Both countries act as trade partners that are both competitive and complementary to one another.
According to sea-news.az that these views were expressed to AZERTAC by Gunay Huseynova, an economist and PhD in Economics.
The expert stated that both Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan’s access to the Caspian Sea creates significant advantages for economic cooperation: “Both countries have access to the Caspian Sea. Import-export operations are being conducted in the energy sector. In 2024, trade operations between the two countries amounted to approximately 383 million dollars. Of this, 299 million dollars accounted for Azerbaijani exports, while 84 million dollars accounted for exports from Turkmenistan.”
According to Gunay Huseynova, the foundation of bilateral trade relations consists of the energy, transport, and logistics sectors. “Turkmenistan plays a crucial role in economic relations between Azerbaijan and Asia, while Azerbaijan plays a vital role in trade relations between Turkmenistan and Europe,” she emphasized.
The expert noted that prospects regarding the export of Turkmen gas to the European market in the coming years could create additional transit opportunities for Azerbaijan: “The export of Turkmen gas to Europe is expected in the coming years. In this process, Azerbaijan is expected to play a significant role in trade operations as an intermediary and transit country.”
