China has officially launched the country’s first zero-carbon emission sea-river intermodal container route. As part of this new service, a 10,000-ton fully electric container vessel named “Ningyuan Dianpeng” completed its maiden voyage this week from Jiaxing Port to Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in Zhejiang Province.
According to sea-news.az citing Seanews.az, the vessel measures 127.8 meters in length and has a transport capacity of 742 TEU. The “Ningyuan Dianpeng” is powered by 10 container-type battery units with a total energy capacity of approximately 20,000 kWh.
The new route creates a zero-carbon logistics chain by connecting electric vessels operating in the inland regions of the Yangtze River Delta with a sea-going, battery-powered container ship. Cargo is first delivered to Jiaxing Port via electric inland waterway vessels and is subsequently transported to Ningbo-Zhoushan Port via the “Ningyuan Dianpeng.”
Official estimates suggest that the new route will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 60 kilograms per container, resulting in a total annual reduction of 4,800 tons. Regarding the “Ningyuan Dianpeng” specifically, the vessel is expected to save approximately 800 tons of fuel annually and prevent the emission of over 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide.
Experts note that China has become a global leader in the commercial operation of electric vessels, driven by strong state support, shipbuilding expertise, advancements in battery production, and significant investments in port infrastructure.
