On June 25, Irans Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched an attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, which is considered one of the most strategic choke points for global maritime trade and oil logistics.
According to sea-news.az The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported this, citing information obtained from two high-ranking US officials.
Details of the Attack
According to the information published by the outlet, the target of the attack was a commercial vessel operating in international waters:
Vessel Status: The targeted cargo ship is registered under the Singapore flag in the international maritime registry.
Result: Although no crew members were injured or lost their lives during the incident, the cargo ship sustained serious material damage as a result of the strike.
Security Risk in Strategic Waterways
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime corridor through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s transported crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passes. Marine transport police, regional navies, and international coalition forces have intensified monitoring in the area to ensure the free movement of commercial vessels.
Attacks of this nature lead to increased insurance costs in the global logistics chain and cause concerns regarding navigation safety to reach peak levels once again.
