The next World Championship in the youth sailing “Optimist” class (2026 Optimist World Championship) is being held in Tangier, Morocco. The competition, which will run from June 18 to 28, marks a historic first for both Morocco and the African continent as a whole, as this global tournament is being organized in the region for the very first time.

According to sea-news.az referencing foreign sports media, the event hosted by the Royal Yacht Club of Tangier (Royal Yacht Club de Tanger) is considered the largest tournament in the championship’s history in terms of its scale. In the championship, 293 young sailors from 77 different countries across all continents of the world are competing for the title. According to the race program, individual races are taking place from June 20 to 27, while June 23 and 24 have been dedicated to intense team racing competitions.

Experts note that racing in Tangier Bay, particularly in the strait where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea meet, requires great skill from the athletes. Due to strong winds and complex marine currents, young talents under the age of 16 are forced to demonstrate their tactical and navigational skills to the maximum level at sea.

The official closing and award ceremony of the tournament, which is considered an important platform for nurturing future Olympic champions, will take place on June 27.
