Belgian gas shipping and infrastructure company Exmar has taken delivery of the world’s first ocean-going vessel equipped with a dual-fuel ammonia-powered engine.
According to sea-news.az the vessel, named “Antwerpen,” is a 46,000-cubic-meter medium-sized gas carrier built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. The ship is capable of transporting both ammonia and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and can also use ammonia as a marine fuel.
According to the company, when powered by low-carbon ammonia, the Antwerpen can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional vessels.
Exmar stated that this delivery demonstrates that ammonia-fueled propulsion has moved beyond the concept stage and entered commercial application. Antwerpen is the first vessel in a series of four ships named after Belgian cities.
