A European consortium bringing together 19 companies, research institutions, and technology providers has launched the FIT-HORIZONS project to accelerate the decarbonization of the existing global shipping fleet.
According to sea-news.az the project is coordinated by Norway’s SINTEF Ocean and has received approximately €4 million in funding from the European Union. As part of the initiative, a digital design platform will be developed to enable faster and more efficient evaluation of vessel retrofit and modernization solutions.
The platform will utilize artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, operational data, and advanced simulation tools to assess a wide range of technologies, including:
- Alternative fuels
- Electrification solutions
- Wind-assisted propulsion systems
- Air lubrication technologies
- Hull modifications
- Energy-efficiency measures
In addition, six virtual demonstration projects will be carried out covering inland waterway vessels, short-sea and deep-sea cargo ships, ferries, cruise vessels, and offshore ships.
The main objective is to accelerate the adaptation of existing vessels to evolving environmental regulations while making the commercial assessment of retrofit projects more efficient and reliable.
