A cargo vessel has run aground and listed near the northwest coast of Luzon Island, Ilocos Norte province in the Philippines, resulting in an oil spill into the sea.
According to sea-news.az the vessel named “MSCI 1”, which was carrying gravel, was deliberately beached on June 8 due to adverse weather conditions. The Philippine Coast Guard reported that all 15 crew members on board were safely evacuated.
Following the incident, an oil leak was detected from the vessel. Although containment booms were deployed to prevent the spread of pollution, strong waves displaced part of the barriers, leading to oil patches along the coastline. Cleanup and restoration efforts are currently underway in the affected area.
Preliminary assessments suggest that the leakage did not originate from the main fuel tanks but likely from the ship’s engine room.
