A collision between the cable-laying vessel Niwa and the container ship Papu has occurred near Pakistans Port of Karachi.
As a result of the incident, Niwa sustained serious damage, including a breach in its hull. Following the collision, port tugboats safely escorted the cable-laying vessel back to Karachi Port. The Papu container ship was instructed to remain at anchor pending further investigation.
While no major damage was reported aboard the container vessel, several containers reportedly fell into the sea during the incident.
Pakistani authorities have launched an investigation into the causes of the collision and its potential environmental impact. Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry stated that the accident may have resulted from negligence on the part of the captains of both vessels.
The Liberia-flagged Papu had previously been cited for 17 technical deficiencies during a port state control inspection conducted in 2025.
