On the occasion of May 18 – International Day for Women in Maritime, a special event was organized at the “Surakhani” Ship-Museum of the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ASCO), part of AZCON Holding.
The event was attended not only by ASCO’s female employees but also by women working in state maritime institutions, international organizations’ representative offices in Azerbaijan, partner shipping companies, and maritime educational institutions.
Participants first watched a sailing demonstration at sea by members of the “Caspian” Sailing Yacht Club from the deck of the ship.
Later, a guided tour was organized through the museum’s exhibition halls, where guests became closely acquainted with artifacts reflecting the history of Azerbaijani shipping and its rich maritime heritage.
As part of the event, rare photographs from the personal family archive of Azerbaijan’s first female ship captain, Shovkat Salimova, were also displayed.
The gathering continued over breakfast with informal discussions, and participants also took part in various entertainment activities and competitions.
It should be noted that International Day for Women in Maritime was established in 2021 at the initiative of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The aim of this day is to promote the role of women in the maritime sector, support gender equality, and increase women’s participation in the maritime industry.
As an IMO member state, Azerbaijan supports international initiatives in this field and places special emphasis on expanding women’s involvement in the maritime sector.
