A search expedition by Russia’s Pacific Fleet has located a ship that sank in the waters of Peter the Great Bay in the early 20th century.
According to the report, naval forces identified a wreck on the seabed during a survey of the bay area. Preliminary findings suggest it is the steamship “Knyaz Gorchakov,” which sank after being damaged by a mine explosion near Vladivostok in 1906.
Archival records indicate that the vessel was sailing on the Odessa–Vladivostok route when it struck a naval mine laid by Japanese forces during the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905).
The explosion severely damaged the ship’s bow. Despite attempts by the crew to save the vessel, it ultimately sank. All crew members are reported to have been successfully evacuated using lifeboats.
