Maritime protection in Turkish waters to be strengthened

Plans are underway to place Turkey’s maritime zones, which open to international waters, under stronger legal protection.

The information was reported by TRT Haber.

According to the report, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is preparing a new draft law within the framework of the “Blue Homeland” doctrine to better safeguard Turkey’s rights and interests in the Black Sea, Mediterranean, and Aegean Seas.

The draft legislation is expected to more clearly define the legal basis of Turkey’s Exclusive Economic Zone and continental shelf boundaries.

It also reportedly aims to clarify the legal framework governing Turkey’s maritime jurisdiction areas and strengthen the protection of access routes to international waters.

The bill is expected to be submitted to the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) after the Eid al-Adha holiday.
