Hydrogen era in shipping

118

Finland’s ship engineering giant Deltamarin has joined the EU-funded “H4PERION” project, which aims to eliminate carbon emissions in long-distance maritime transport. The four-year program focuses on developing hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines at full scale and demonstrating their real-world application in commercial shipping.

As part of the project, testing will take place both in laboratory conditions and onboard the ferry “Aurora Botnia.”

Deltamarin’s role goes beyond engine development; it will also model how the new technology can be integrated into different ship types and assess its scalability across the maritime sector. This is considered a key step toward making hydrogen engines a standard solution for future commercial vessels.

The program also covers the development of safety regulations for hydrogen fuel adoption, crew training requirements, and adaptation of port infrastructure. In this way, H4PERION aims to move hydrogen from theory into practice, building a broad ecosystem to position it as a leading fuel in maritime decarbonization.
