New digital portal launched for shipping

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has introduced a new online platform that tracks disruptions in global trade in real time based on vessel movements. Launched this week, the digital tool monitors the transportation of 23 different commodity groups across more than 4,100 ports worldwide.

Using artificial intelligence, AIS vessel-tracking data, and network modeling, the system identifies supply chain risks during geopolitical tensions or infrastructure-related incidents.

The platform was tested using the 2024 collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The technology demonstrated its ability to detect trade disruptions caused by the incident significantly faster than traditional statistical reporting methods.

According to the OECD, the platform is not intended to replace official customs statistics, but rather to help identify major economic turning points and emerging trends during periods of uncertainty.

Despite certain technical limitations related to container shipping analysis, the system is considered a major step forward in the real-time assessment of maritime risks.

The platform will be publicly accessible on the organization’s official website starting Monday.
