The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has announced the passage of one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container vessels, as part of efforts to strengthen confidence in the safety and reliability of the route.
The Singapore-flagged CMA CGM Grand Palais departed on its maiden voyage after being completed in China, heading toward the Mediterranean Sea. With a length of 400 meters and a capacity of 23,876 TEU, the vessel is considered one of the largest LNG-powered container ships in the world.
SCA Chairman Osama Rabie stated that long-standing cooperation with CMA CGM continues, and that tariff incentives have been introduced to enhance the canal’s competitiveness. He emphasized that the transit of such mega-vessels demonstrates the strategic importance and reliability of the Suez Canal.
However, major shipping companies such as Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd continue to use alternative routes, citing security concerns.
Meanwhile, a recovery in maritime tourism has also been observed, with the cruise ship Crystal Serenity expected to transit the Suez Canal in the coming days carrying passengers.
