A container ship owned by Maersk has collided with a feeder vessel at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port in Bangladesh.
The incident occurred as the Singapore-flagged Maersk Chattogram, with a capacity of 2,700 TEU, was approaching the pilot station. According to initial reports, the collision caused significant damage to the vessel’s starboard side, resulting in a large breach in the hull plating.
Crew members stated that the damage is limited to the outer hull, while the engine and steering systems remain fully operational. Maersk’s local representatives said the ship will discharge its cargo at the port before being sent for repairs.
The other vessel involved, the HR Turag, a feeder ship built in 1999, previously operated under the name Maersk Arun within the same fleet and has been sailing under the Bangladeshi flag since 2023.
The Bangladesh Department of Shipping and port authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
