No injuries have been reported following an explosion and subsequent fire aboard a South Korean-operated cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all 24 crew members are safe. Six of them are South Korean nationals, while the rest are citizens of other countries.
The ministry confirmed that the fire on board the HMM Namu has been fully extinguished. Damage assessments are currently underway, and the vessel is expected to be directed to a nearby port for repairs.
The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation. The explosion reportedly originated in the engine room on the evening of May 4.
South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has stated that the possibility of an external attack has not been ruled out at this stage.
