New Phase at the Port of Baku: Seventh Berth Commissioned

As part of modernization efforts carried out by Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), operating under AZCON Holding, a significant upgrade has been implemented at the Port of Baku. The previously unused Seventh Berth has now been brought into active operation for the first time.

The berth’s technical capabilities have been enhanced with the installation of a next-generation crane with a lifting capacity of 125 tons. This upgrade enables more efficient and simultaneous handling of containers and other cargo.

The commissioning of the Seventh Berth will help balance operational flows within the port, particularly during peak periods, ensuring uninterrupted operations. As a result, growing cargo volumes can be managed more efficiently and promptly.

This development also holds strategic importance for the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor). By improving the speed, reliability, and predictability of cargo transportation along the corridor, the new berth further strengthens the Port of Baku’s strategic role.

The installation of the modern Italian-made crane allows for more efficient utilization of existing infrastructure. It increases throughput capacity, optimizes cargo handling processes, and reduces waiting times — all without requiring additional large-scale investments.

At the same time, the crane’s electric operation contributes to lower carbon emissions, supporting the Port of Baku’s “Eco-Port” approach.

As a result of these improvements, the port’s annual container handling capacity is expected to reach 260,000 TEU. The commissioning of the Seventh Berth is considered one of the key operational steps toward achieving this target in a shorter timeframe.

Overall, the introduction of the new berth and advanced equipment enhances the port’s operational flexibility, transforming it into a more efficient, sustainable, and competitive logistics hub. This, in turn, significantly contributes to expanding Azerbaijan’s transit potential and strengthening its position as a strategic transport hub in the region.
