Canada continues to modernize its fleet under its national shipbuilding strategy. As part of this effort, the first Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS), which will later be named “CCGS Donjek,” has been successfully launched at the Halifax shipyard.
Built by Irving Shipbuilding, the vessel is 103 meters long with a displacement of 6,677 tons. Designed as a multi-purpose platform, it is intended to operate in Arctic waters for icebreaking, search and rescue, fisheries patrol, and humanitarian assistance missions.
The ship is equipped with a helicopter deck, a medical facility, and a 20-ton crane for scientific research operations. It also has the capability to provide logistics and supply support to coastal communities.
The project is part of Canada’s CAD 63 billion investment package for defense and security in the 2025–2026 federal budget.
Currently undergoing final preparations alongside the quay for testing, the CCGS Donjek is scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026, while another vessel of the same class, CCGS Sermilik, is planned for delivery in 2027.
