Pakistan is interested in the soonest implementation of the project for the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline, the leading Pakistani media say.

Pakistani Energy Minister Muhammad Hammad Azhar, in a conversation with the Turkmen ambassador to Islamabad Atajan Movlamov, expressed interest in the soonest completion of the construction and commissioning of the TAPI gas pipeline.

The head of the Pakistani Ministry of Energy stressed the need to work out all the details of agreements on the transportation and supply of Turkmen gas to the mutual benefit of all countries participating in the TAPI project.

In September 2020, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, in a telephone conversation with President of Pakistan Arif Alvi, discussed the timing of the start of construction of the TAPI gas pipeline on Pakistani territory. It is expected that in 2021, Turkmenistan will begin construction of the TAPI gas pipeline in Afghanistan.

The total length of the TAPI gas pipeline is 1,814 km, of which 207 km – through the territory of Turkmenistan, 774 km – through Afghanistan and 826 km – through the territory of Pakistan to the Indian border.

The construction of the Turkmen section started in December 2015. However, there is still no information on how many kilometers the Turkmen side managed to build.
