Job Description

The Lead Engineer is responsible for working with the IM to establish the daily/weekly/monthly goals and milestones required to successfully accomplish the I&C Plan.  The Lead Engineer maintains direct responsibility for the leadership and management of the personnel (NOV/Contractor) assigned to him by the NOV IM. 

The Lead Engineer ensures the future success of the NOV Equipment by ensuring the proper installation, start-up and commissioning of all systems and by providing the necessary feedback to engineering/manufacturing to correct deficiencies/prevent reoccurrences.

The Lead Engineer serves as the IM’s representative on the installation site.  The Lead Engineer is responsible for ensuring that project specific contractual requirements related to installation and commissioning activities are fulfilled.

The Lead Engineer must have strong technical, leadership, communication (both written and oral) and organizational skills.  The Lead Engineer must be able to handle multiple tasks in a rapidly developing environment, as well as the experience, judgment, and initiative to assume responsibility, make decisions and take appropriate actions to ensure the successful installation and commissioning of NOV supplied equipment. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with the IM to develop the NOV I&C Plan.  This plan details the sequence, durations required and manpower requirements for Installation, Electrical Completion, Start-Up and Commissioning of the NOV supplied Equipment.
  • Provides direct leadership and management of NOV I&C Team members assigned to his charge by the NOV IM (can consist of 5-25 NOV personnel at a time).  Works with the NOV IM to establish Daily/Weekly Goals and communicates them to the NOV Team Members under his charge on a daily basis.
  • Provides daily status updates to the NOV IM on progress in order to maintain the overall NOV I&C Plan.  Ensures that the NOV IM is kept abreast of all issues/delays on the job site.
  • Ensures that all daily reports of NOV Personnel he is charged with supervising contain the necessary detail and follow all requirements laid out by the NOV IM (content, structure, submission times, etc.).
  • Responsible for assisting the NOV IM in identifying required commissioning spare parts and necessary stock levels based on the project’s specific equipment make up.
  • Responsible for assisting the NOV IM in identifying required commissioning tools/equipment needed based on the project’s specific equipment make up.
  • Participates in the NOV Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Program on site as required.  Ensures that all NOV Personnel under his charge also adheres to all the HSE Program requirements on site at all times.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for Shipyard/Customer representative of his same discipline during Installation and Commissioning operations.  Attends on-site coordination and customer meetings as required.
  • Responsible for working with the NOV QA/QC Representative to provide the necessary feedback/information for deficiency and corrective action reporting requirements.
  • Responsible for working with the NOV Materials Coordinator as required to provide support to clear punch list items related to shipping/material handling.
  • Ensure that all NOV supplied equipment is fully and completely commissioned.  Ensures that all contractual requirements related to commissioning activities are met and that the completion of the I&C phase of the project results in a Rig ready to go to work.
  • Ensures that all NOV processes and procedures related to installation and commissioning activities are implemented and followed on site. 
  • Assists the NOV Installation and Commissioning Department Manager with updating and maintaining the Installation and Commissioning Group Quality Manual by providing feedback and input on Installation and Commissioning requirements.
  • Perform other tasks as required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess necessary technical training with 5+ years’ experience in his assigned technical discipline or equivalent work experience. Oilfield experience preferred.
  • Must possess advanced knowledge of Simatic Step 7 PLC programming tools and its related software structure.
  • Must possess advanced knowledge of Cyberbase drilling control top systems- Servers, Drilling Control Network (DCN) and Interface (DCI), Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens, as well as the Variable Speed Drive Systems and Machine Control Cabinet
  • Must possess strong leadership and organizational skills.  The position requires the ability to take charge of groups of NOV personnel to implement the requirements of the I&C Plan (usually under difficult conditions and under short timeframes).  The candidate must be able to create and maintain a team atmosphere comprised of individuals from many organizations with varying skill levels.
  • Must possess strong planning skills.  The Lead Engineer must understand the basics of planning and be able to take a plan and put it into action.
  • Must possess very strong written and oral communication skills.  It is imperative that all candidates have the ability to write and speak clearly and effectively.
  • Must possess a fair degree of MS Office skills, should be comfortable in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook at a minimum.
  • Must be a self-starter, well organized, and have the ability to exercise good judgment and work independently.  
  • Must be willing to work in a shipyard environment where the normal workweek can consist of seven 12-hour days and must be willing to be flexible in terms of both daily hours and rotation schedule in order to meet the needs of the project.  NOTE: For non-rotational operational staff the working hours are typically reduced to five 12-hour days and possible 6-hour day on Saturday (depending on the needs of the project).
  • Should be familiar with the various pieces of NOV Equipment (all product groups).  The depth of this knowledge should allow the candidate to plan for the installation and commissioning of the equipment  by identifying what has to be done, how long will it take, and what the outside influences that affect the equipment are. Product types- Drill String and Crown Mounted Compensation systems, Pipe Handling and Pipe Racking equipment, Top Drives, Roughnecks, Mud Pumping systems, Skidding systems and Skates, Cranes, Winches, Anti-collision Zone Management systems, Pipe Interlock Management (PIM) and Automated Drilling Multi-machine Control (MMC) systems.
  • Must also be prepared to fill in on other Installation and Commissioning jobs located throughout the region as required.  This position may require the need for travel to various locations and as such all candidates must be able to accommodate regional travel.
