An oil tanker was shelled in the eastern part of the Strait of Hormuz by the Iranian Navy. According to Iranian state television citing the press service of the Iranian Naval Forces, the vessel attempted to traverse a restricted zone in the Sea of Oman with its tracking systems turned off.

Sea-news.az reports that a fire broke out on board following the strike.

Details regarding the flag under which the vessel was operating and the condition of its crew members have not yet been disclosed. The attack occurs amidst heightened regional tensions following US President Donald Trump’s declaration on July 8 that the ceasefire had been breached, prompting renewed US strikes and subsequent Iranian missile and drone attacks on US military facilities in the Persian Gulf region. As disagreements over the nuclear program and maritime security persist, commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has effectively come to a standstill.
