Severe ferry accident in Zimbabwe

The death toll from the ferry accident on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe on August 11 has risen to 72.

Sea-news.az reports that the ZBC television channel conveyed this information, citing police data.

Previously, it was reported that 68 people had died as a result of the accident. Search and rescue operations are currently ongoing at the scene. In parallel, the process of identifying the bodies is being carried out by the families of the deceased.

The exact number of people on board the ferry remains unknown. This is due to children traveling accompanied by their parents being allowed onto the vessel without purchasing tickets.

According to preliminary data, the ferry capsized in Lake Kariba—which has a depth of over 50 meters—due to strong winds and rough waves. It is reported that there may have been more than 160 people on the vessel.

It is noted that 77 people were rescued following the accident.
