Azerbaijan is set to join the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments.

According to sea-news.az that a draft law regarding Azerbaijan’s accession to this International Convention has been submitted to the Milli Majlis (Parliament).

The draft law was discussed at today’s meeting of the Parliament’s Committee on International Relations and Interparliamentary Ties and was recommended for the plenary session.

The primary objective is the protection of the environment. For context, this Convention, adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2004 and which entered into force on September 8, 2017, aims to prevent the transfer of invasive aquatic organisms and pathogens to new ecosystems via ships’ ballast water. The document serves to protect the marine environment and biodiversity.
