The Canadian government plans to entrust the construction of new submarines to a consortium led by the German company “Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems” (TKMS).
According to sea-news.az citing the newspaper Bild, that the total value of this project, which will be one of the largest military orders in Canadian history, is expected to exceed 61 billion euros in the long term. According to the information, the value of the contract in the initial phase will be approximately 10 billion euros.
It is estimated that between 13 billion and 20 billion euros will be spent on the direct procurement of the submarines, while the remaining amount will be directed toward technical maintenance, operations, and modernization of the vessels over several decades.
Canadian officials aim to replace their four aging submarines currently in service with 12 modern vessels. It is reported that the new fleet will significantly expand the country’s capabilities for continuous operations and patrols in the Arctic, the Atlantic, and the Pacific Oceans. Although the contract has not yet been officially signed, it is expected that the German consortium will be announced as the preferred official supplier in this major tender in the coming days.
